Need help kicking the sugar habit?
Can you believe that the average Briton will consume 238 teaspoons of sugar each week? Shocking, isn’t it? You may wonder how on earth the average person could consume so much sugar in just seven days but when you take a look at the hidden sugars found in foods, it’s not so hard to believe.
When you think of the foods that might contribute to this overwhelming amount of sugar, sweet treats such as cakes, chocolate bars and fizzy drinks spring to mind. However, there are hidden sugars in processed savoury foods too, such as crisps, sliced bread, sauces, and soups.
When we are constantly eating foods that contain so much hidden refined sugar, it isn’t so hard to see why we have become a nation of sugar addicts.
But how on earth can we try to cut down on our sugar intake and be as ‘sugar free’ as possible if these sugars are hidden from us?
If you’re anything like me and have a daily craving for chocolate, then you need to be introduced into the world of raw chocolate.
Raw chocolate might not sound as appetising as a slab of Galaxy Caramel but you can find some yummy brands who create delicious flavours from natural ingredients.
Chocolate only needs very few ingredients to be created, raw cacao being the key ingredient. It’s important to look at the percentage of coco solids in your bar of chocolate. The higher the percentage, the higher the quality of your chocolate, as it is be less likely to be made up of other hidden ingredients.
Raw chocolate is not sweetened with refined sugar, instead chocolate makers use natural sweeteners, such as coconut nectar, agave syrup, coconut sugar and yacón syrup. Raw chocolate is also often flavoured with delicious berries, coconut and nuts.
There are plenty on the market, you just need to find one that tantalises your taste buds. My particular favourite is Mr Popple’s Chocolate which contains just two ingredients, raw cacao and yacon syrup. Yacón syrup is a sweetening agent extracted from the tuberous roots of the yacón plant and contains the least amount of sugar of all the sweeteners used in raw chocolate, yet it has a similar taste to caramelised sugar. Delish!
So when you’re next craving something sweet, instead of reaching for some Dairy Milk, try a square of raw chocolate. You won’t need much to satisfy your sweet tooth as it tastes so rich due to the high cocoa content, and you’ll soon be kicking your sugar habit for good!
