Do you really know what’s in your tap water?
Keeping hydrated is essential for a healthy body and mind, which is why it’s extra important to make sure that the water you’re drinking is safe.
Although water companies are legally required to supply suitable water for domestic purposes, this does not prevent the treated water from containing harmful toxins such as fluoride, chlorine, lead and even unnecessary high levels of hormones, to name a few.
Fluoride is said to be added to tap water to improve dental health. However, the chemical has been linked to depression, weight gain, fatigue and aching muscles as studies have found that it inhibits the production of iodine, which is essential for a healthy thyroid.
Research from the University of Kent shows that rates of high underactive thyroid increase by 30% in areas with fluoride levels above 0.3 mg/l. Worryingly, the study found that GPs in the West Midlands were almost twice as likely to report high hypothyroidism than in Greater Manchester, where fluoride is not added to drinking water.
That’s not all! During the purification process of water, chlorine is used even though it is not totally safe as exposure to it can cause respiratory problems and damage cells. In addition, lead is toxic to almost every organ and can cause a number of problems from developmental issues to prostate cancer but can be released into tap water from corroded pipes.
Research has also shown that our drinking water contains hormones such as oestrogen which enters our water systems due to the use of the female contraceptive pill. A study by the Environment Agency found that the active ingredient in the pill, which cannot be easily cleared from our tap water, can cause freshwater fish to change sex- that surely can’t be healthy for us!
At Natural Healthy Foods, we are passionate about providing safe drinking water, which is why we have installed a multi stage water filtration system in our new venue. You can rest assured that your drinking water will be free from nasty chemicals and substances when you visit us.
